Extra rail security gets support from business passengers

Security on the UK’s railways should be improved and upgraded, a survey of business travellers has found.

According to the survey, carried out by Barclaycard, 90 per cent of business travellers welcome the additional security measures that have been introduced at airports.

However, three-quarters of respondents felt that a lot more needs to be done to raise the level of security on the rail system, including on board trains and at stations.

Denise Leleux of Barclaycard said: “People who are travelling by train more, but are used to seeing increased security at airports, are asking ‘is this safer’?”

The Association of Train Operating Companies responded by saying that intercity routes, popular with business users, were “very highly staffed” and that most intercity trains operate at stations where there are a lot of staff.

The introduction of a limited number of metal detectors and bag x-ray machines at stations is not planned for some time.

The worry of the government is that a significant increase in rail network security measures will mean a corresponding increase in delays to journeys, and more complaints from the travelling public.
